The Dubai desert in a nutshell
The desert around Dubai means sand dunes, with Hatta in the Hajar mountains as a mountain trip rather than a dune trip. Most guided safaris drive out to the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which covers 225 square kilometers (about 87 square miles), roughly 5 percent of Dubai's area according to Emirates. Other options include Lahbab and the Big Red dune, the Al Qudra lakes, the mountain village of Hatta, and Liwa across the border in Abu Dhabi.
This guide covers evening, morning, overnight and private desert safaris, hot air balloons, dune buggies and quad bikes, dune bashing, camel rides, the desert areas, Al Qudra, Hatta, Abu Dhabi, desert resorts, tips and the best time to go. It is an independent site, not run by Visit Dubai, Dubai's tourism department, the conservation reserve or any safari company. Prices are those listed on public offer pages in 2026. They are not final checkout prices, and they change.

Good to know
Where older guides and listings are out of date or unclear.
Hatta has a season
The new Hatta season was announced to start on 28 September 2026. Operators list different seasons and opening hours, so not every activity runs all year. Check the timetable before you go.
Hatta guide →Balloon prices differ
One operator lists AED 1,695 for adults on its product page and AED 1,995 in its FAQ. Neither is confirmed as the binding price, and pickup and cancellation times differ too.
Balloon flights →"Private" means an exclusive vehicle
It does not mean your own car or an exclusive camp. A nature drive without dune bashing is a separate product.
Private safaris →Al Maha accepts children
The hotel's own website accepts children of all ages and lists surcharges from age 6. It is not an adults-only resort.
Desert resorts →Abu Dhabi does not always mean Liwa
Safaris from Abu Dhabi also go to Al Khatim. Liwa lies about 250 km from the city, with 2.5 to 3 hours of driving each way.
Abu Dhabi safaris →More independent guides to Dubai
Separate guides from the same team.
Dubai desert: frequently asked questions
What is a desert safari in Dubai?
A guided trip by 4x4 into the dunes, usually with a sunset or sunrise stop and a camp. Contents differ: an evening trip may add a falcon show, a camel ride and a barbecue buffet, while a morning trip is shorter and ends with a breakfast box. See desert safaris compared.
How much does a desert safari cost?
As listed in 2026, one operator shows an evening safari from $177 and a morning safari from $130 per person. An overnight stay at another operator starts at AED 1,195 per adult. These are single offers, and vehicle, group size and options change the price.
What do the travel advisories say right now?
As of 21 October 2026, the German Foreign Office advises against non-essential travel to the UAE (since 30 September 2026) and cites a volatile regional situation and possible airspace closures. The UK advice of 24 July 2026 cites a risk of escalation and flight disruption. The US lists Level 3 ("Reconsider travel") since 29 August 2026. Read your own government's advice before you book and choose flexible cancellation terms.
When is the best time to go?
Dubai's tourism portal recommends camping from November to April, and the summer months are very hot. Balloon flights and overnight camps also have their own operating months. See best time to go.
Can I go into the desert with children?
On one evening safari, children aged 5 to 11 have a child rate, and children under 5 need a private vehicle with special seats. Balloon flights exclude children under 7. Rules depend on the product, so check the one you book.
