What dune bashing is
Dune bashing means driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle quickly over sand dunes. The vehicle climbs ridges, slides sideways and drops down slopes while you sit strapped in. It is the part of most desert safaris that people either love or find too rough.
The length varies. One operator lists a 30-minute dune and wildlife drive in a 4x4 as part of its evening safari. That is one company's product, not a legal standard, and other safaris spend more or less time on the dunes. Ask how long the dune drive is before you book, because the rest of the safari is camp time and transfers.

Three ways to be in the dunes
Not the same ride, not the same strain on the body.
| Option | How it feels | Example from operators |
|---|---|---|
| Dune bashing | Fast, steep, sideways slides | 30-minute dune and wildlife drive |
| Nature drive without dune bashing | Slower, on tracks and gentler slopes | Offered by one heritage operator as its own product |
| Camel trek | Slow, at walking pace | 45-minute trek |
A nature drive without dune bashing is a separate product. Do not expect the same driving style from it, and do not book it expecting a thrill ride. If you are unsure, ask for the version that matches what you want.

Who should skip it, and what operators say
Honest limits, without drama.
Heart, neck and back problems
One large operator warns guests with heart, neck or back problems, or other conditions that off-road driving can aggravate. If any of this applies, ask your doctor before you book. No operator page can clear you medically.
Pregnancy
For pregnant guests and others affected, alternatives must be arranged in advance. Tell the operator when you book, not at pickup.
Motion sickness
If you get car sick, say so when you book and ask for a calmer option, such as a nature drive without dune bashing.
No promises
Nobody can promise an accident-free ride, and a claim to be the safest is only a claim. Look at the things you can check, below.
Seatbelts, children and child seats
Request seats ahead of time.
Wear the belt
Operator guidelines require a seatbelt during the drive.
Child seats
Ask for baby seats or boosters when you book, not at pickup. The general guidelines distinguish baby seats from boosters and private vehicles from shared ones, and the rules in a specific product can differ.
Young children
The evening safari example lists children under 5 as needing a private vehicle with special seats. Rules for the morning product are different, so check the product you are booking.

What you can check before you book.
Driver training
Dubai's tourism department requires a 5-day driving course from the road authority for drivers of commercial safari vehicles. Safari driver permits are renewed every year, with a half-day course and an assessment.
Permits are separate
Operator, driver, vehicle and camp each need their own permit. A tour listing does not prove that all four are in place, so ask the operator.
Where it happens
Many safaris run in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which points visitors to approved excursions. Red dunes at Big Red sit in the Lahbab desert. The desert areas page explains the differences. Do not assume you can drive into the reserve in your own car.
Dune bashing in Dubai: frequently asked questions
Is dune bashing dangerous?
It is rough driving, and operators warn guests with heart, neck or back problems. No operator can promise an accident-free ride. Wear the seatbelt, tell the operator about health concerns and pick a calmer option if you are unsure.
How long does dune bashing last?
One operator lists a 30-minute dune and wildlife drive on its evening safari. The length depends on the product, so ask.
Can I do a desert safari without dune bashing?
Yes. One heritage operator offers nature drives without dune bashing, as a separate product with a different driving style.
Is dune bashing suitable for children?
It depends on age and on the product. Child seats must be requested in advance, and under-5s need a private vehicle with special seats on the evening safari example. Check the product you book.
Can I go dune bashing in my own car?
You should not plan on it. The reserve points visitors to approved excursions, and the dunes are rough ground for an ordinary car. Book a guided tour instead.
What do official travel advisories say right now?
As of October 21, 2026, Germany's Federal Foreign Office has advised against non-essential travel to the United Arab Emirates since September 30, 2026, citing a volatile regional situation and the risk of airspace closures. The UK Foreign Office updated its advice on July 24, 2026 and notes the risk of further escalation, flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures. The US State Department has listed the country at Level 3, Reconsider travel, since August 29, 2026. Read your own country's current advice before you book, and choose flexible cancellation terms.
