The desert around Dubai is several places
People say "the Dubai desert" as if it were one area. In practice it is a handful of places with different rules. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, usually shortened to DDCR, is a managed reserve. Lahbab is where the red sands of Big Red Dune lie. Al Marmoom is a separate, unfenced reserve. Al Awir and Margham are areas where individual operators run camps or activities.
This page is an independent guide, not run by the reserve, a tourism authority or a tour company. It helps you work out which area your safari actually visits, because two tours that look alike can start in different places. Prices and times are examples from operator pages in 2026, and they change.

The main areas compared
What each place is and how most visitors reach it.
| Area | What it is | How visitors usually go | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) | Managed reserve of 225 km² with dunes and wildlife | Approved excursions, mostly guided safaris | Some morning and evening safaris drive here |
| Lahbab and Big Red Dune | Red sands with room for sandboarding and quad riding | Guided trips are the simplest way; check access rules before driving yourself | Quoted dune heights are not survey figures |
| Al Marmoom | Unfenced reserve, separate from the DDCR | Visits to the lakes, which lie inside it | See the Al Qudra guide |
| Al Awir | Area where one operator describes its own safari and camp site | Through that operator's tours | Times and prices differ by operator |
| Margham | On the E66, the Dubai-Al Ain Road; base of a paramotor flight operator | Through activity bookings | Not a fixed launch site for balloons |
The table shows where each name belongs. It is not a ranking, and the areas serve different kinds of trips.
Our pick: Lahbab on a morning safari
Of the areas listed here, Lahbab with its red dunes is the one this safari names as its destination.

The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
The reserve behind many morning and evening safaris.
Access is by approved trip
The reserve's own website points visitors to approved excursions. Do not plan on driving in yourself. Current product pages show DDCR drives at two large operators, but that is not a full list of who may enter, so ask your operator which area the tour uses.
What a drive looks like
One evening safari lists a 30-minute dune and wildlife drive in a four-wheel-drive vehicle. A morning product lists a dune and wildlife drive, a camel ride and a breakfast box. Sightings of oryx or gazelles are possible, but nobody can promise them.

Zone rules stay with the operator
Booking an approved trip does not tell you every local rule. Your driver and guide know the zone rules, so follow their instructions on distances to animals, photo stops and where you may walk.
Two start dates in the sources
Sources give 2002 for the creation of the reserve and 2003 for its protection by government mandate. Both appear in older company statements, so treat any single founding year with care.
The visitor centre
A visitor centre opened at the reserve in October 2023. It is separate from entry to the whole reserve, so check opening times and entry before you plan a stop.
Lahbab, Big Red Dune and the other areas
Places outside the reserve that appear in tour descriptions.
Lahbab and Big Red Dune
A tourism overview of camping places in Dubai assigns Big Red to the Lahbab desert and mentions red sands with sandboarding and quad riding. Operators sometimes quote a height in meters. Treat such numbers as marketing, not as a survey. Free access and free camping do not follow from that overview.

Al Marmoom
Dubai's tourism portal describes Al Marmoom as an unfenced reserve. It is managed separately from the DDCR. The Al Qudra lakes and the heart-shaped Love Lake are part of it.
Al Qudra and Love Lake →Al Awir
One operator describes a safari and camp site in Al Awir. The name tells you the area, not the quality, the vehicle or the program, so compare the tour description rather than the place name.
Margham
Margham lies on the E66, the Dubai-Al Ain Road. It is known as the base of a paramotor flight operator. A balloon trip may start somewhere else, so ask for the meeting point and the launch area.

The answers separate similar-looking safaris.
Many safaris sound the same, and the difference lies in the details. Ask these questions before you pay:
Which area does the drive use, the DDCR or another site? How long is the dune drive, and how much of the trip is transfer time? One evening product lists 6 hours in total with pickup at about 4 p.m. and a first transfer of about 45 minutes. A morning product lists 4 hours, pickup at about 8:30 a.m. and return at about noon.
Is the vehicle shared or exclusive? A private vehicle is not a private camp. What is included: camel ride, falcon show, dinner or breakfast box? Public prices start at $130 per person for the morning example and at $177 for the evening example in 2026, and the final price depends on vehicle, group size and options.

Check the cancellation terms too. The two examples above require notice at least 24 hours before the start, with no refund inside that window. Weather and operating changes remain possible.

Dubai desert areas: frequently asked questions
Can I drive into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve myself?
The reserve points visitors to approved excursions. A free self-drive entry does not follow from that, so book an approved trip or ask the reserve for the current rules before you go.
Where is Big Red Dune?
Tourism information places Big Red in the Lahbab desert. The dune is known for its red sand. Be careful with height figures in tour ads, because they are not survey values.
Is the DDCR the same as Al Marmoom?
No. They are separate reserves with different management. The Al Qudra lakes lie inside Al Marmoom, which Dubai's tourism portal describes as unfenced.
Will I see oryx or gazelles?
They live in the reserve, and morning and evening drives look for wildlife. Sightings depend on the day and cannot be guaranteed.
What do travel advisories say about the UAE?
Germany's Federal Foreign Office has advised against non-essential travel to the UAE since September 30, 2026 (status October 21, 2026), citing a volatile regional situation and the risk of airspace closures. The UK FCDO updated its advice on July 24, 2026 and points to the risk of further escalation, flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures. The US State Department has listed the UAE at Level 3, Reconsider travel, since August 29, 2026, citing terrorism and armed conflict. Read your own government's current advice before you book, and choose flexible cancellation terms.
